Louisiana’s gay marriage ban was upheld Sept. 3 by U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman. This ruling was the first of its kind after more than 20 states overturned their gay marriage bans. Feldman also ruled that Louisiana does not have to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Feldman cited same-sex marriage supporters’ failure to adequately show how the ban violated equal protection, due process or the First Amendment.
