In their first match
of the season, the Franciscan University of Steubenville tennis squad
traveled to Erie, Pa., to face AMCC foe Penn State Behrend. The
two-time defending champs proved to be too much, as the Lions defeated
the Barons 8-1.
Behrend triumphed in five of the six singles matches. Though Andrew Straub made a strong showing in second singles, only Chris Cooper playing in the third spot was able to win his match. In doubles play, the Lion dominance continued; although they played tough, the Barons were unable to match the Lions’ experienced players.
FUS coach Curtis Allen stressed that it was the first match of the year, and the Barons played well given the circumstances. Franciscan had their first taste of competition, while it was Behrend’s fourth match.
“You could tell they (PSU Behrend) had been playing a lot,” said Allen.
He then emphasized the bright spots of the match and what FUS can build on.
“I was pleased with how they played considering it was our first match,” he said. “Chris played very well. He lost the second set, but had the mental strength to pull it out.”
The Barons hope winter fades soon so they can practice outdoors on the Belleview courts, Allen said. Until then, they’ll do all they can to improve with what they have.
“We’re just trying to go hit as many balls as we can every day,” said Allen. “We have to get more experienced.”
Franciscan travels to Penn State Altoona Thursday, and then hosts their first home match of the season Saturday at 1 p.m. against D’Youville College.
