During the Student Government meeting on Oct. 23, one bill was passed and the vice president of student life, David Schmiesing, gave those present an overview of changes taking place at Franciscan University of Steubenville.
Fall Bill 31 was a request from the athletic department for $3,498.72 to buy t-shirts for Baron Midnight Madness, an event the basketball team is hosting on Nov. 9. With t-shirts priced at $5.92, the team hoped to order 591 t-shirts.
Student life had previously given them $1,500 to purchase pizza, prizes and glow sticks.
The athletic department did not send a member of the team to represent the bill, risking the bill being tabled indefinitely. A senator who worked in the athletic department agreed to represent the bill and the bill passed unanimously.
To bring the business portion of the meeting to a close, Joe Danaher, president of Student Government, thanked those present for getting Fall Bill 31 passed so quickly.
He went on to say that in the future, Student Government does not want to bear too much of the financial burden of Midnight Madness. Student Government has sponsored the same event with similar amounts for the past few years, and does not want to set a permanent precedent.
Following the president’s comments, Schmiesing spoke on important changes taking place at the University that will affect the student body. After his talk, he opened the floor for comments and questions, and discussion ensued until the end of the allotted meeting time.
