New students on campus might be disappointed by the apparent lack of places to go and things to do in Steubenville, Ohio. But don’t feel down just yet; there is still plenty to do in the neighboring areas around Franciscan University.
For instance, Robinson Township, Pa., which is just 35 minutes east of Franciscan University, offers a large shopping mall, local stores, many famous chains of restaurants, a newly opened Market District, and a wave pool. Additionally, Robinson has movie theaters, bowling alleys and many other attractions. Latitude 40, on the north side of Robinson, has restaurants, an arcade and two bowling alleys, and hosts various special events throughout the year.
Pittsburgh, which is 10 – 12 miles from Robinson Township, is another exciting location. Its vast supply of attractions includes two major theme parks, Kennywood and Sandcastle, along with Idlewild and SoakZone. Not to mention, Pittsburgh is home to three major sports teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins. Pittsburgh also holds the Carnegie Science Center and the theater district for shopping and entertainment. When in the city, be sure to visit Primanti Bros., where you can purchase one of the best sandwiches in the world made hot and fresh.
If these locations get old, there are other places not far away such as Beaver, Pa., and Boardman, Ohio. Both are north of Franciscan University, roughly a 45 – 60 minute drive. Boardman and Beaver are both known for their shopping malls, but host a variety of other attractions as well.
The Highlands, located south of Franciscan University, near Wheeling, W.Va., does not have a shopping mall. However, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts will love the massive Cabela’s store there. The Highlands offers other shopping and dining options as well, including several famous chain restaurants, Books-A-Million, Target, Kohl’s, and JC Penney.
For a long weekend out of town, try Dayton, Columbus, or Canton, Ohio. History buffs will appreciate Dayton’s Air & Space Museum, and Canton boasts the Football Hall of Fame, the burial site of William McKinley, and the First Ladies Museum. Columbus, being the state capital, has a little bit of everything.
These are just a few suggestions for exploring the area around Franciscan University of Steubenville. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of all the area has to offer and have some fun adventures.
