Pepperoni rolls are local treat

There is a delicious treat that is indigenous to the Ohio Valley. If you’re new to the area, or if you don’t get off campus very often, there’s a good chance you’ve never had a pepperoni roll. This must be remedied.
Most locals don’t realize how rare an item the pepperoni roll is. I was shocked and appalled when a fellow student informed me that he’d never even heard of the foodstuffs until he came to Steubenville. They’re abundant enough in the Valley, but you won’t find them on the menu at the typical restaurant. Pepperoni rolls can be found in almost any gas station, food mart or locally owned grocery store. They consist of a six- to eight-inch-long piece of bread filled with pepperoni, cheese and delicious flavor.
As with any recipe, variety abounds. It seems that the only common features are some sort of bread, be it baked or fried, and pepperoni. Of course, if you’re looking for the place to find the best pepperoni roll in the area, you’re reading the right article.
The honor goes to the Convenient on Fourth Street in downtown Steubenville. Its foil-wrapped pepperoni rolls are available every day on top of the fried chicken case. Each crispy, savory, cheesy delicacy will set you back a mere $2.99, and they taste great with a cold sweet tea. Yes, you can only imagine how fattening one of these culinary treats is, but believe me when I say it’s worth the calories. (That’s what diet drinks are for, right?)
In my lifetime as a local, I’ve eaten a lot of pepperoni rolls. Let me save you some time on your Ohio Valley experience: go straight for the best on your quest for local cuisine. Convenient is practically across the street from St. Peter’s on Fourth Street, so you really have no excuse not to go there. Go forth, eat well.
