New York’s St. Patrick’s Day parade to include gay group

A gay group will be participating openly for the first time in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day parade in March, the parade committee said Sept. 3. OUT(at)NBCUniversal was the group chosen to march this coming year, but parade spokesman Bill O’Reilly said others can apply in the future.

In a statement to The Associated Press, the parade committee described the change as “a gesture of goodwill to the LGBT community in our continuing effort to keep the parade above politics.” The committee also maintained it was “remaining loyal to church teaching.”
