Finnegan Fieldhouse was packed Monday morning as students and faculty gathered for Mass to begin the spring semester with praise, fellowship and grace.
Franciscan University of Steubenville president, the Rev. Sean Sheridan, was the main celebrant for the 10:30 a.m. Mass.
Sheridan said in the homily that a Catholic university must pursue research, social outreach and teaching in order to live out its mission.
“There is no separation between what we believe and how we live,” said Sheridan. “That is how Jesus invites us to follow him more closely … to be his presence in the world on a daily basis.”
Sheridan continued his homily by saying how one listens to God’s call by loving and living one’s vocation.
“The more we listen, the more we will come to know and understand all that God has in store for us. The more we embrace all that God asks of us, the more we will become one with Christ.”
The feast day of Saint Hilary of Poitiers, bishop and doctor of the Church, was celebrated during the opening Mass.
