I wrote last time on the frightening state of our country with the health insurance mandate. The most frightening part of it is that Christianity is being attacked. I'm going to admit that I did not watch the Grammys. However, at about 11 p.m., I received a text from a journalist friend of mine telling me to watch out for Nicki Minaj in the news the following morning.
Minaj's performance at the Grammys, which displayed blatant disrespect for Christianity, saddens me greatly. As if the Catholic Church needs another thing to worry about with the struggles she is facing with health care right now.
For those of you who, like me, did not watch the Grammys, I'll fill you in.
Minaj opened her performance in confession with a man garbed as a priest. The performance moves on to imitate an exorcism with dancers dressed as altar boys as well as one dancer dressed as a bishop.
A big question that has arisen since the show is how the performance ever even got approved. "Never would they allow an artist to insult Judaism or Islam," said Bill Donahue of the National Catholic League in a statement.
Another question that arises from this performance is why? What was the purpose of pulling such a stunt? Even Minaj's fans sat in front of their television wondering what was going on and what it meant. Twitter posts from fans are posts explaining how they are simply baffled by the performance.
Lady Gaga has openly performed and recorded music videos that mock the Catholic Church. She is quite open about her sentiments toward the Church. Some people are speculating that Minaj's performance is way of competing with Gaga, however, Minaj has not confirmed this.
So far neither Minaj nor the Recording Academy has issued an apology or any type of response to the performance, according the Washington Post.
Moments like these frighten me for the future of Christianity. It is my hope that this outspoken disrespect for Christianity among those in the entertainment industry will cease. Everyone knows the things you do not discuss with strangers are religion and politics. It amazes me that pop stars have not taken this word of advice and in fact, blatantly go against.
It is time for an apology and a change on behalf of the entertainment industry and all those who do not respect Christianity.
