At the moment Mitt Romney holds 90 delegates, to Gingrich's 30, and Ron Paul's seven. It may not be certain yet but it's becoming increasingly more likely that Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee. But does Romney even have a chance at beating Obama in a presidential election? Not really.
Usually the biggest threat to an incumbent president is a bad economy, but recently the economy has been improving. When Obama took office we were losing 700,000 jobs a month, but under Obama's presidency the private sector has added more than 3.1 million jobs and the U.S. economy has seen 23 straight months of private sector job growth. Granted, we have seen under Obama's presidency an increase in the national debt, but, considering the Obama administration's belief that government stimulus packages help a down economy, the increase in the national debt is understandable. Besides, as long as the economy is improving, the average American isn't that worried about the national debt.
Some republican strategists have suggested that Obama may be vulnerable on foreign policy, but if that's Obama's most vulnerable area, then republicans don't stand a chance. The Obama administration has managed to stay out of the problems in Egypt, and achieve success in Libya without sending in a single soldier. Under the Obama administration soldiers entered a Pakistan compound and killed Osama Bin Laden, a decision which, according to Vice President Biden, most of the top advisors were hesitant to suggest. The Obama administration even put an end to the Iraq war, which had become one of the longest wars in American history.
You also have to remember that Obama has used plenty of negative advertising before in the 2008 campaign. With Obama hoping to raise a billion dollars in fundraising for this election that will translate into a lot of negative advertising, and unfortunately in politics negative ads work. There is also the fact that Obama doesn't often make mistakes during a campaign, whereas Romney not only has made many public errors, but those errors almost always attack him where he is weakest, making him seem like a billionaire who is out of touch with average Americans.
If there is already video of Romney saying "I like being able to fire people," and "corporations are people, my friend," or him trying to make a $10,000 bet with Rick Perry, can you imagine how bad Romney is going to look in those negative ads? And if this is all just what Romney has said before the presidential race what will he say when the race gets started and the pressure is on? Republicans like Paul Ryan, Chris Christy, and Sen. Rubio had it right waiting to run in 2016 when Obama is gone. Republicans can vote for Mitt Romney but the chances of him beating Obama are slim to none.
