Franciscan University President Issues Call for Special Lenten Prayer and Action Against HHS Mandate

STEUBENVILLE, OH—Father Terence Henry, TOR, president of Franciscan University of Steubenville, issued the following statement today on the Health and Human Services mandate that will force religious institutions and all employers to purchase insurance policies that include morally objectionable services:

"Today, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent, a season set apart for prayer, fasting, and penitence. As a Church, those are the most powerful weapons we have in our arsenal. They are our strongest line of defense against those determined to weaken and divide us. They also are the surest means of guaranteeing our fidelity, our steadfastness, in opposing evil. They are what keep us close to Christ and in the heart of the Church.

Rick Santorum's campaign visit to Steubenville

rick santorumMore than 500 people crowded Froelich's Classic Corner to hear Rick Santorum campaign Monday morning.

Wearing his signature sweater vest, Santorum approached the podium to applause and began by thanking Franciscan University of Steubenville for being a "beacon of light," to the world by upholding true Christian principles.

University students made up a sizable portion of the crowd. In addition to students, Franciscan attendees included the Reverend Dennis Gang T.O.R, Dr. Scott Hahn, and Daniel Kempton.

Santorum attends Mass on campus

santorum on campus 1Attendees of the 12:05 daily Mass on Monday were pleasantly surprised when Fr. Terrence Henry, TOR, President, and celebrant took a moment to announce that Senator Rick Santorum was among them. Santorum had spoken earlier that day at Froehlich's Classic Corner in downtown Steubenville. The University was informed of the Republican Presidential candidate's attendance only early the same morning and had planned to keep it as unadvertised as possible.santorum on campus 2

However, with the arrival of security in and around the chapel, rumors began to fly. By the end of the Mass, a sizeable crowd had gathered in excited anticipation outside. When Santorum exited, he was greeted with a round of applause and several hands eager to shake his.santorum on campus 3

Bradley Stalder, a junior and resident assistant in Louis and Elizabeth halls was impressed that the Senator had "taken the time to visit campus and to stand right along with us at Mass."

"He's a great hope for the country" and this shows that he is "really serious about his faith" said Josh Mazrin after celebrating Mass with the Senator. Santorum will continue his campaign tour with stops in Michigan later on Monday followed by appearance in Phoenix, Ariz. on Tuesday.

FUS students help local family

Students of Franciscan University were called to serve the suffering in a fundraiser for the family of Lee West during the week of February 13 to February 17.

West, a freshman student of Steubenville High School, was killed in a house fire on January 31. Students for a Fair Society initiated a fundraiser to collect money for West's funeral costs and to support the West family in rebuilding their lives.

Ecumenical talk by Madrid

In a talk given by Patrick Madrid, Catholics and Protestants were urged to bridge the gap between different perceptions of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Ut Unum Sint sponsored the talk on Scripture and Tradition given to students from Franciscan University and Wheaton College on Saturday, February 11.

Madrid, a part-time professor of Theology and Catechetics at Franciscan University, and the author of 16 Catholic books, spoke on the separation between Catholics and Protestants. He discussed the need for all Christians to seek unity. He said that Christians need to "take a moment to recognize that division is a bad thing, and the scandal of division between Christians is something we should work to overcome."
