The wait is over for dozens of students as Franciscan University intramural basketball has taken off in full force.
The first week of games, starting on Jan. 30, and involved about half of the more than 40 teams. Both men and women's A and AA divisions have launched into their preliminary matchups.
Theresa Weisbrod, a member of the women's team Blue Steel, is thoroughly excited about the start to the season.
"Our first game was a great one," said Weisbrod. "Intramural basketball is a ton of fun and it's a great way to relieve the stress from classes and school work."
Intramural basketball is one of several intramural sports offered at Franciscan University. There are two divisions, A and AA, for both men and women. Each team usually has around 10 players. In every fall semester, flag football and volleyball are offered; in every spring semester, basketball and ultimate Frisbee are available.
The basketball games are held in Finnegan Fieldhouse throughout the week. Weeknight games are typically held later in the evening, while weekend games are earlier in the afternoon. They are open to whomever wants to watch.
This season of intramural basketball continues throughout February and into the beginning of March. The playoffs take place during the week of March 5.
