Sports column: Are you man enough?

It's that time again. Time to talk about awesome, All-American sports! Motor sports-in particular.

According to merriam-webster.com, a sport is defined as a "physical activity engaged in for pleasure," and "a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in".

Personally, I believe that there are three major categories in which to place the different "sports". First, there are true sports, athletic competitions, and motorsports. I would also like to say that it doesn't really matter from which category said activities come from; they are all awesome in their own right.

Young talent shines in season-ending loss

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Coming off the heels of a nail-biting overtime loss to La Roche College on Wednesday, the Franciscan University Barons had one more chance to notch their first win of the season as they traveled to D'Youville College on Saturday. Despite a strong first half effort, stellar rebounding and offensive contribution from young players, Franciscan ultimately fell to the Spartans, 79-62.

"We started off the game riding the momentum of the La Roche game in the first ten minutes of the first half," first-year head coach John Lamanna said, "but then we went on a real scoring drought and couldn't find the basket."

Lady Barons finish the season with a win

BUFFALO, N.Y.— After a disappointing loss to La Roche Wednesday during their last home game of the season, the Franciscan University Lady Barons finished the 2011-2012 season with a 64-50 win over D'Youville College Saturday afternoon.

"The girls are excited about this win," said head coach Luke Heusel. "We grew throughout the season and we did some things better as a team and had better defense overall today. This is a great way to finish the season and we look forward to continuing to build on this next year.

Swimming and diving team earns runners-up in AMCC

swimming and diving champsGROVE CITY, Pa.— The first year for Franciscan University's swimming and diving team has proved to be a season filled with excellence and Saturday proved no differently. After four days of competition in Grove City College's James E. Longnecker Invitational, which serves as the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship and the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship, the Lady Barons ended their season runners-up in the AMCC.

The Lady Barons started the season as a team with no experience and finished with a powerful presence made known through their hard work and consistent performances.

Intramural basketball in full force

The wait is over for dozens of students as Franciscan University intramural basketball has taken off in full force.

The first week of games, starting on Jan. 30, and involved about half of the more than 40 teams. Both men and women's A and AA divisions have launched into their preliminary matchups.
