New sickle cell guidelines impact campus sports

BY MARGARET MORRIS

Nine student athletes gathered in Franciscan University of Steubenville's Finnegan Fieldhouse Sunday evening to view a presentation on sickle cell trait.

The purpose of the meeting was to inform the students of the risk and allow them to waive their right to blood testing.

Following a vote at an NCAA convention in Grapevine, Texas last January, NCAA standards changed to require all student-athletes at the Division III level to complete the testing.

Intramural sports strengthening (new) friendships

BY DAN WINDHOLZ

Sports bring together players from all backgrounds and allow them to bond on a deeper level than being everyday friends just hanging out.

Intramural sports foster a sense of community among players and challenge them to better themselves by being virtuous, healthy people, along with building campus life.

Kelly Hermann, an alumna and current women's volleyball coach, came from a highly sports-oriented background and was disappointed when Franciscan didn't have varsity teams. However, she participated in intramural softball and loved it.

Lacrosse team preserves despite bad weather conditions

BY DAN WINDHOLZ

Although he finds himself with nearly an entirely new team, Coach Peter Rosaschi looks forward to the Baron Lacrosse season, while finding himself deterred by the freezing temperatures and snow-covered fields. Practice so far, according to Rosaschi, has been tough but allows for much improvement.

"There are a lot of opportunities to get in shape," Rosaschi said.

At the mostly negative temperatures throughout the week, practice has been difficult for the inexperienced lacrosse team. However, Rosaschi sees all the work his team is demonstrating and admires the players who endure such temperatures and still persevere.

Perseverance leads to growth

BY CLAIRE BACH

Perseverance is something that has pervaded my life since a young age. I started running cross country in the fifth grade and continued to run competitively through high school and my four years here at Franciscan. Throughout my 12 years of running, the importance of perseverance is one of the most valuable lessons I have learned.

There were many times when I had a bad practice or race and wanted to give up, but to give up would be selling myself short of the opportunity to grow. Some of my favorite memories from cross country come from opportunities in which my team and I had to persevere.

One time I twisted my ankle right before a race and couldn't compete—leaving me on the sidelines while my teammates ran their races. In watching that race, I was able to really see the depths to which these runners dug to persevere through the physical and mental exhaustion. As I continued to heal, I was challenged to persevere in a new way through rehabilitation and patience with myself as I eventually got back to running again. The satisfaction of knowing you stayed strong in the face of adversity and gave everything you had is undeniably thrilling.

Kuzma Night ends with Barons winning by 1 point

BY ELENA LUKE
ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

dsc 01442A missed half-court heave at the buzzer secured the Barons' third conference win, 66-65 against Penn St.-Altoona, finishing Franciscan University's 6th Annual Kuzma Day on a high note.

"The biggest thing tonight?" head coach John Lamanna said. "We scored when we needed to score. We got stops when we needed to get stops. That was critical."

After nearly 40 minutes of hard play and two free throws made by the Lions, only 12 seconds and one point separated the Barons and Altoona. FUS burned nine seconds with assertive ball movement, finding themselves at the foul line with 3.3 seconds left in regulation.
