5th Annual Kelly Roggensack race

Five years ago, the Steubenville community and Franciscan University of Steubenville mourned the death of Kelly Roggensack. She was a student at Franciscan who passed away in a car crash.

That same year following the loss, the university and community put on the first annual Kelly Roggensack Memorial Race.

Later, a permanent memorial was built, located just outside of the J.C. Williams Center. On the plaque accompanying the permanent memorial, a favorite quote of Roggensack is visible, reading, “May you always live life to the fullest with joy in your heart.”

Coaches from Roggensack’s cross-country team said that the runner’s ethic on and off the course inspired the team and Baron athletics as a whole in many ways.

“Kelly Roggensack lived each day with the mantra, ‘Be a force for good in the world,'” said cross-country assistant coach, Don Bennete.

“Kelly was a special person who touched a lot of people in her life,” said cross country head coach Dan Kuebler. “The Kelly race is a way to keep her memory alive and not forget the wonderful person she was.”

Five years later, the community and University continue to recognize and hold Kelly’s memorial, with the 5th Annual Kelly Roggensack Memorial Run/Walk. The event, including a 5K Run, 3K Walk and (new this year) a 1K Kids Run, will be held on October 6,2012.

All participants are requested to pick up their race bibs after 7am, up to 10 minutes prior to their race. Late registration will start at 7am on race day. The 1K Kids Run will begin at 8 am, followed by the 5K Run, 3K Walk at 8:30 am. The first 100 entries get a free t-shirt. The course consists of paved road, gravel, dirt and grass, so spikes are not recommended.

Bennete said that the proceeds of the Run/Walk go to both the up-keeping of Kelly’s Garden, the cross- country team, as well as towards future memorial run/walks.
